• Mondarra Gas Storage Facility

APA Group is Australia’s largest natural gas infrastructure business. Its gas transmission pipelines span every state and territory in mainland Australia and delivers half of the nation’s gas usage.

Of all of the gas infrastructure projects operated by APA in Australia, the Mondarra Gas Storage Facility (MGSF) is one of the most significant. Strategically located in Western Australia at the intersection of the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline and APA’s Parmelia Gas Pipeline, the MGSF services all of Perth and the south west of Western Australia.

After a 2008 energy crisis resulted in a gas supply emergency, APA set out to expand MGSF by drilling additional storage wells. As the only commercial gas storage facility in Western Australia, the expansion gave both buyers and sellers more options in managing gas production and consumption.

MGSF now contains three wells that access the reservoir through the use of two Ariel KBU/6 reciprocating compressors driven by Caterpillar 3612 drivers. These compressors deliver the capability to inject gas at 70TJ/day and withdraw gas at 150TJ/day. The facility has been designed and constructed in such a way that allows for easy expansion by tying-in additional wells and gas processing equipment.
